2000 big bear 400 help...
Was riding late one evening when my headlight bulbs blew and busted bulbs didn’t blow fuse. Few days later it just cuts off like turning the switch off look and it blew ignition fuse tried another and blew it. So come to find out fried CDI replace it and rec/reg and new battery no more fuse blowing but won’t turn over with starter. Jump solenoid and it turns over but no spark at all. Trying to figure out if possibly my stator has burnt up and if that would keep the starter from turning over? |
Check the kill switch circuit. Depends on the model, but some cut both spark and power to solenoid when in the kill position.

Not sure how to check that circuit. Electrical is not my cup of tea lol. Also what does the motor control unit do it’s a black box with a 5 wire pig tail coming out of it next to the battery. |
If you are unsure about electrical testing it may be best to send it to a Quad or motorcycle repairer. No point in spending big money on new Stator and CDI and finding it still won't go, then giving it to an expert who finds a broken wire.

Thanks merryman. But I feel pretty confident I can fix it myself with a little guidance so I just purchased a clymer servicemanual gonna give it a go when I get the time. |
well I been messing with some testing and still haven’t found the problem

Start with the starter circuit, it is more simple than the ignition system on most machines. Clymer should show you how to test it, or at least what is in the circuit, that needs checking.
|
My clymer just has the wiring diagram for my model but shows starting circuit for the older models. But thanks will check it out. |
The clymer manual is wrong on some wiring too.

Googled two diagrams, supposed to be for a 2000 Big Bear 400, and one shows the start button connecting the solenoid to earth, t'other shows it connecting to the pos wire from the ignition, so about as different as you can get. Both diagrams show a relay, diode and the solenoid wires going to the CDI, so a fairly complex set up.
