The shop found a broken shifting ratchet.He replaced it with a used one (found a good deal)Also, he changed gear oil, the gasket, and took apart, adjusted, and glass beaded front brakes. Also, some loose things were welded back in place

Clean? the brakes are, if that's what you're asking.

Sometimes the cost of labor amounts to what the shop knows or the mechanics skill and know how, not the job they performed or how long the job took to complete. Shop manuals set out man hours required to perform a certain job. Good mechanics can usually complete a job quicker than time allotted in a shop manual. This is where a mechanic and the shop make their profits & bonuses.
Do you have the tools, skills and ability to fix the shifter?
I think you are the only one who can determine if $550.00 was worth getting your machine professionally repaired and back in a timely manner.
