Ok i have a 400ex but want a wolverine for a little more utility work. I noticed the tires aren't the greatest so I was thinking of getting some Titan 489xt's for a little more traction. Should I get the 23s or the 25s? I dont want to loose much power because I am used to my 400ex. Is there a big difference in power lose...or is the gain from bigger tires worth it. Mostly I ride trails and a little mud, but the added ground clearence would help a lot for climbing logs and such. Also, is the wolverine going to be replaced with something soon and if so what might it be? Thanks

On a totally stock Wolverine,you will definately feel the bigger tires,and the 489xt is a 6 ply,even heavier. I went with Maxxis Sur Trak,they run a lot shorter than stated size, they are only slightly bigger than the stockers, I have them on aftermarket rims,ITP steel modulars,real heavy,but with my mods I don't have any problem with them,just have to update the suspension to make up for the bigger tires/heavier rims.
On the subject of the future of the Wolverine,I was talking to the local Yamaha dealer a few weeks ago,he was at a show,and griping about why the 2003 Wolverine wasn't updated with a different engine,2-4 wd,etc. The only response he got from the Yamaha rep was "why change something we plan on replacing soon?" What that means is not clear,no more Wolverine? a totally revamped Wolverine? A new model to replace it completely? The rep offered no more info,so I can only guess.I just hope it isn't another member of the monster cc club, myself,I would like to see a light,sporty 4x4 for those of us who like the features the current Wolverine offers.

Or you could do as I did. I have 24 inch 489XT's on mine (on Rancher rims). They bolt right up. 489Xt's measure slightly shorter, the 24's are just over 23" high. I ran them last winter on my Recon, and I was really impressed with their snow/ice traction.

I had the Sur-Traks on mine, nice tires, light, but... they are 2 ply, amd mine have several plugs and nasty cuts in the tread bars.
