when i first got my 03 raptor i fouled the plug after 4 hours,,, here i am 7 weeks later on my 4th plug. my reverse gear bogs out everytime, and i snapped the rear grab bar on the first day practicing wheelies. but then again ive flipped it about 8 times, foward, sideways and almost backwards if it werent for that grab bar, a bit of advice, if you're new to the sport dont start out with a raptor becuase even if cant afford to start small and upgrade, go for the z400 or the 400ex, dont start out so big, ive had too many injuries and flipped her too many times b4 i got used to it... anyways, can anyone give me any tips on what might be wrong with the reverse gear, and the spark plug problem. (the 'tor is currently being checked by my nearest yamaha dealer - thank goodness for the 6 month warranty) thanks for any help you can give

Did you rejet the bike when you got the Big Gun pipe? if so then what you put the jet size in?
Sound like you might be running too rich, Possibly the float might be stuck and causing to dump more fuel into the motor? Ask the dealer to see if the motor is running too rich and LET them know you are fouling the plugs all the time!! It is important to let them know why you are fouling the plugs! Sound like you are really beginner on that bike and it too much for you to handle the Raptor!! GO EASY on the THROTTLE!! The Rev. gear might be out of adjustment of the cable? Good luck and don't try to kill yourself!! |
Hey guys..i have an 02 raptor ive had it for around 3 months now, have gone through 2 oil changes on her,i have flipped it 4 times end over end at a high speed and not bend a thing on it, only problems ive had with the bike was my carbs blew off after installation off my jet kit, my bad....make sure you get them bad boys all the way back inside the intake! i have a white bros r series slipon dynojet kit k&n filter with airbox lid mods,im running a 148/146 main jet setup....the point i want to get across...alot of people talk crap about the raptor the bikes going on its third year being on the market, i waited around on the 2001 models to see how they were going to handle...when the 2002 came out i test road one and found it to be alot more responsive than an 01....but if you ride a bike beyond your abilaties how do you expect the bike to stand up to it if your not able to...body posistion is key to riding a quad properly...ive rode my 02 hard for its first 3 months being in my garage....im not one to constantly break his quad, but i ride it like it should be...all you 2001 raptor riders out there sorry you got stuck with junk...my 02 screams...hopefully it wont break...i doubt ill bend or break anything unless i ride it beyond my abalaties

For someone starting out on a raptor I can tell you that the reverse gear is very high. The best advice that I can give is to go down a tooth on the front. This will make reverse much more manageable. Will hurt your top speed some, but I think it may help you for a while until you get used to her. Give it a try costs you 10-20 bucks and can be changed back in just a few minutes.
I also want to say dont be dissapointed in your bike so quickly I wouldnt trade my Raptor for my wifes Z for the love of money. Just take your time be patient and you wont be dissapointed once you get the hang of it. I would have to agree with desracers about the jetting causing your plug problems. |
Sounds like you need to simply learn throttle control! If you are a beginner, don't try to hang with the big boys right out of the box, or you will end up on your noggin. As for going down a tooth on the front sprocket, I would maybe shy away from that, because it will make it even more prone tho wheelie in the lower gears. Also the rear grab bar is not made very strong, I too broke mine in a very short time frame, then built my own, which is many times stronger than stock, but it too bent after coming back hard on the gas. Just be careful, that is the main thing, do this and you will learn and be able to develop you lessons into experience for the future...going up a tooth on the front sprocket will tone down the wheelie attitude a bit, but may very possibly make the reverse problem worse, .... ask many questions first...Good luck...

Oh yeah, I have yet to foul even one plug, running Perrrrrfect....

Don't be scared! Just be careful and don't ride beyond your ability.

Hey Bshep. I am in bay city, maybe we could go ridin some time. You ever been to Bull Gap? If not, that place is sweet. It has about a 500 foot hill climb that you can drag race people up. There is alot of trails around it too. If you wanted, we could meet there in one of these upcoming weekends. Email me some time and maybe we could work something out (Freerdr2001@aol.com)
