A single rate spring has only one spring on the shaft, a double rate shock will have two different springs on the shaft each with its own compression rate(one will be stiffer than the other) a triple rate shock follows the pattern of the previous. The huge difference comes between zero preload and standard long travel shocks. A standard shock sits at the top of its travel(stock) when the bike is on the ground. A zero preload shock sits below its "top-out" point lowering the overall stance of the bike. When the bike leaves the ground the suspension will "drop out" and allow the use of the full travel. The technology has come from off road trucks used in baja/ desert racing. I have had my TCS staduim zero preload shocks for over a year and couldn't live without them. Tcs stadium shocks allow you to adjust your ride height easily giving your bike woods/track capabilities. When landing of large jumps the initial shock travel is absorbed before you have even gotten to the springs...this allows the rider to set the bike down easier/less twitchy...its obvious where I think the most benefits lay...zero preload...watch a stadium truck...suspension always seems to bottom but it doesnt...good luck
