What are your thought on them and how do they hold up against a rancher.
Dont say they are faster because if i get a rancher i will get a rancher AT 400 (2004)

Mine has been a good machine.I ride with several people that have them and they feel the same.I have one of the early 2000's with about 1000 miles. There was a water pump problem that was corrected and many more updates since. If it were me I would spring for the 450 if for nothing else the resale. The 400 does not have low range, the park position or of course the locker on the front end.The 400 also has a drum brake on the rear vs a disc on the 450.I have also considered the 400 Rancher when it comes out to replace mine.I like the fact it has part time 4x4 and they upped the cc's.Don't worry about the speed, there are two Rubicons in our group.....good machines but my kodiak beats them both...in drags and top end but not by much so I assume a machine 100 cc's less will not be as strong.Hope this helps more than hurts.

I just got my water pump a few days a go, that'll be a big help! Also the choke cable is bad, water will run down the cable housing into the carb where the spring on the end of the cable will rot out and or freeze in the winter. Fix this too.

As for the new ones, get the, they took away a lot of the's features and put them on the, plus added a locker! bonus!

Both are good, very capable quads. The 450 has some nice additional features but if you are interested in strictly trail riding you would probably be fine with a 400. If you ride them back to back and didn't look down you wouldn't be able to tell a difference. If you are doing domething that needs low range and or locking diff. such as plowing snow, pulling trailers, extreme riding conditons than the 450 is the way to go. If we could add any one feature from my 450 to my wifes 400 it would be the digital gage package.

Thats funny you mentioned the choke spring Rincon.I had not had any problems with mine on that until a couple of weeks ago.Mine was corroded up and the spring had no (spring) left in it.Yamaha sells the kit incl the plunger for $12.00

It was $20 up here!!! My sping broke with the choke stuck on, needless to say it worked like crap!! (once it warmed up, and didn't need the choke)

These seem to be the only problems i've seen so far, good new i guess

well my best freind has a 03 450 and my grampa has a 03 400. they seem to do ok wheir we ride but the 450 will out tow and push more snow. in a drag race the 450 has more mid range and top. the low end on the 400 seems to have more grunt. but the 450 has a low so that takes care of that. but for the money get the 450. Get the 450, you will not regret it. The diff lock has been very handy through 2 feet of snow and low range is great for towing things. I pulled a 850 lb snowmobile trailer through 2 feet of snow no problem. It has been extremely reliable. A rancher cannot compare to this baby. Im sure ranchers are great but i think a 400 or 450 is a better deal for the money. Put a good set of tires on the 450 and it will climb/chew through just about anything. I haven't got much ime in mud on my machine since the drought is really bad up here. Hopefully this year we will get some good moisture enough to make a nice mudhole!

Oh yeah my 450 has 25 inch bearclaws...even in 2 wheel drive in snow this thing chews and it also has a warn 2000 winch I think (it could be a 2500, not sure)
Oh yeah its in CANADIAN blue
I plan on putting a K&N airfilter on it and a big gun exhaust system when they come out with it.

Hmm I went with the 400, one thing summed it up.. $4900 out the door for a new 03 Kodiak 400. They wanted $5950 for the 450. As for the ride well I have not been on a 4 wheeler since i sold my Banshee in 1990. This 400 is still real fun..

Good Luck
