Break In Tips for new cam and piston

I've heard a lot of different things about break in: Light and easy (some say this doesn't seat the rings well enough) or break it in like you are going to ride it (some say this is bad too).

What's the best way to break in a Raptor with new 10.75 JE piston, Hotcams stage 1, ported head, new '02 gears?

Thanks for all the wisdom.

I read something about runnin it up to 80% in a high gear, then letting it cost back down in gear, and then doing 90%, then 100%. letting it coast back down in that gear to normal speed. And not to use synthetic oil because it hinders break in. Ill see if I can find the link for you with the complete instructions.

When should I re-torque the cylinder head? Airraptor, do you have any input?

Most of it makes sense to me.

Craycraft is doing the porting for me. Got everything torn down, head sent off, ordered 02 tranny and waiting on everything to come in.

I can't freakin' wait!

I'm in the same position. I'm about ready for my break-in. The newest ATVsport magazine has a long article about break in, but I think it's a little bit overkill. It says to start engine, and let it idle for 10mins with a fan blowing on it from the front. Then shut it off for 30mins with the fan still blowing. Do this 4 times. Then ride the machine for 10mins, varying the RPM's at 50% of your normal riding pace without straining the motor. Let it cool for 30mins. Now do five more individual 10min rides each followed by a 30min cool down period. The rides will ultimately consist of a 10min ride at 60% of your normal pace, then 10mins at 70%, then 10mins at 80%, then 10mins at 90%, then a last 10min ride at full riding speed, and another cool down session. Break in is now complete. Overkill, I think.

Also, when I install all new paper gaskets, should I coat them with anything, or put them in dry? O-rings?

What parts need assembly lube? I know the camshaft, and cam journals, but how about the piston pin, and anything else?

Never let a new cam sit there idling (during break in). Ride it for twenty minutes with rpms between 3000-6000, let it cool completely, then adjust valves, then ride it with gradual, strong accelerations, then let off the gas, and let it quickly decelerate.

Always let the motor slowly warm up before you jump on it, and take off.

If it were mine-

1. 20 minutes above 2000 rpm for the cam. either stationary or easy cruising, let cool down
2. Ride easy from 2o minutes and let cool down
3. ride easy 30 minutes varying the rpm and let cool down
4. Cruise easy for a hour and let cool down run it below 75 percent.
5. Ride it but do not abuse it for the next 1 hour.
6. Race time

Always let the quad warm up before you get after it whether it is new or old. I always let mine warm up for 3 to 5 minutes and get everything up to temp before i give it hell. And i try to let it cool down before i shut it off. I just do not come flying back to camp and turn the key off.

From what I've read, you go out and in the first 4 minutes you smoke the tires. If the head gasket holds your golden.

Sorry, couldn't resist.
