Raptor Won't Start. HELP!!
#1
I have a totally stock 2001 Raptor that won't start. I rode this weekend on a Saturday and it wouldn't start the first time so we had to pull start it. After that it started fine for the rest of the day. The next day we had to pull start it almost 15 times because we would get it started and it would die again when taking off the rope. After I had been riding for about half an hour, I stopped and as soon as I let off the gas it died, and would turn over but not start, and it would backfire really loud. It did it 3 or 4 more times at that place, then we decided to go somewhere else and ride so we put all the quads on a trailer and drove about a mile to our other spot where it started up and rode right off the trailer. After riding for a little bit it died again when I stopped and we had to pull start it again. I rode for about a hour or so without stopping and when I did I shut it off and when I tryed to start it, it started right up and started 3 times after that. When I got it home I changed the spark plug and cleaned out the air box and filter (lid has 5 holes in it, big enough I dont see the use for a lid) and it still won't start. Whats wrong with it??? I need help bad!

you may have blown the carb boots off, it will be hard to start but run after pull starting like you did
Look down by the carb and make sure they are fully seating in the boots. Other wise they may also be ripped.

Have you changed or adjusted anything lately?
open the screw on bottom of both carbs and drain them-this also assures you are getting fuel
My POS did the same thing for over a month before I found a wire ALMOST broken right under the key switch. The damn thing would pop back fire start when it chose and shut off when it pleased.
post some more info and we can have you riding this weekend

While your at it fixing things also check the choke plunger in the left carb, the cable lets water down into the choke mech and it rots the
spring and the choke will stick.
Yamaha sells an updated choke cable with o-ring to keep water out. wether it works or not I dont know. I just occasionally remove the cable and grease up the plunger and spring.

I had the same problem then it got worse then it wouldnt start. I went thru everything then found out it was the valve adjustment. So try that and please keep us informed to what it was. Hope this helps.

Ok, it hasnt sat for more than a week, I have been cautious about where i ride because about a month ago i went riding in some heavy mud and got it caked so bad in between the front sprocket and the shaft it ate away the seal going into the shaft and was throwing oil everywhere. The only thing I have adjusted is the idle when I start it, and I guy who I got it from said that i should always start it with the choke on because he didnt and it ruined his starter. The plug in it are brand new so it shouldnt be that. I dont think it would be the choke sticking because I was letting a friend ride my old blaster and he forgot to turn the choke off and he said whenever he let off the gas it would die, but it started for me before i knew it was the choke, and the raptor would only die when i came to a complete stop and let off the gas.
