Default 81 atc 200 help

I posted a message in the honda forum before I noticed this one was here. I just bought this trike for $200. Runs strong, smokes a lot. It's my first Honda and my first trike. My first question of many is, how do I get the pull cord to stay wound while putting it back on? I have a manual on order, but really want to go "play" now. I got the cord put back in I just can't figure out how to get it back on "right" Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Recoils can be a PITA. Which way did you have it when you rewound the spring? Was the cord all the way in or was it out? I can't remember which it is supposed to be, it's been a while since I've messed with the recoil. Just do the opposite of what you did the first time. The spring will tighten it up.

You don't have to tell me!! The spring never came out, I got lucky. I don't think I tried to put it back on with the string out, because I can get it to recoil in my hand, just not on the machine. Does this make any sense?
