Thanks John,
Your post helped me out. I had the same problem and just taking the sensor off and cleaning it seemed to do the trick so far. I didn't have any aligator clips to be able to check the resistance as I moved the gears, but as it turned out I didn't need to do it.
Thanks Again
Steve D.

02 Honda Recon -shifting problem
I too recently have had a shift problem with my Daughters Recon. I disconnected and cleaned the ECU and angle sensor Connectors. The problem went away temporarily ( possibly because I disconnected the ECU ). It came back an hour later when I went to park it in the shed. The 1st gear light was blinking 8 times. I am going to the local Honda shop tonight and will purchase a new Angle sensor.

Still working?
I was told the shifting shaft coming out where the auxilary shifter goes gets kind of frozen up from water. The little silonoid that shifts the gears can only do so much. Lube that shifting knub with a penetrating oil worked for me. After I lubed it I would spray marine white grease around it.
Also, even a manual tranny needs to be rocked sometimes to get in and out of gear.

I had the same problem with mine. I had a busted wire between the angle sensor and the ECU. On my Rancher the angle sensor is on the left hand side of the engine just above the belly plate (Low) If you don't already have one get a service manual, it will be the best investment you ever make. (You will need the wiring diagram out of the manual to check your connections to the ECU) That is if it's not the angle sensor itself.
