Default '02 sportsman not charging

I replaced the v/r on my atv about 4 months ago and all was fine. The other day the battery light started flashing so I checked and it was not charging. I removed the v/r and it was covered with black sticky material form getting too hot. any ideas as to what may cause this? The regulator was a moose brand.

Could either be just a faulty regulator where the diodes have shorted out or could be a a stator problem. Check the yellow wires leading onto the v/r. Should be resistance between yellow to yellow and no yellow should short to ground. If you have a good meter set to ac amperage, have the machine in neutral, crank it up by the recoil starter with the meter wires on the yellow and yellow/red. Should show right at 7 amps. Any more than that the stator charge coil could be faulty and the stator would need to be replaced. Hopefully it's just a faulty v/r even though it's fairly new.Plus always have the battery load tested as to whether it needs to be replaced also. One of the most overlooked items.

The battery is new. Not exactly sure what you are saying about yellow to yellow and no yellow. There are
yellow and yellow w red tracer brown and red...these are at regulator

The yellow and yellow/red are the stator charge wires you check.Have the meter set on ohms and test each wire to each other. Should show resistance between each other, plus with a red meter lead in each one,the black lead to ground,it should not show a short to ground. Amperage test is between the yellow and yellow/red also. 7 amps according to the manual.
