If your engine was in good shape wouldn't matter at an idle or wfo.. You didn't do anything wrong by running it this way..The engine was just ready to go by the sound of it,especially if this was a stock piston. You just sped it up a little. Again whether you choose to repair it,sell it as is,part it out and get another one, choice is yours. No one here can make that decision for you one way or the other.

With an average price of $1200 Kelley Blue Book for an old machine like this one,the only way you'd really make out is to repair one and keep it until the wheels fell off. Depending on what all's wrong on a 400 engine, you can tie up anywhere from 500-800 bucks on parts and machine shop labor with you pulling and installing the engine. Cheaper than buying a new one,but you'd have too much in it on repairs to turn it for any kind of major profit.Plus condition of other parts, suspension, tires, etc have to be considered also. I've found a little of both kinds of people over the years. Some that said to heck with it and parted them out and got a new one, others wanted them fixed to suck a few more years out of them before they parted company.

You mentioned the engine was locking up and that was one of the things I said that could be doing it along with internal engine problems. If you can get the belt off see if the engine turns over by turning the clutch or using the recoil starter.Could be all there was to it? If the engine still tries to lock, then you still have problems.
