Boss in need of 4×4.

Dear ATVC: I have a 1991 Polaris 250 Trail Boss 4×4 and the 4 wheel drive will not engage. Any help regarding this matter would be amazing.

Because of the vagueness of the question, we can only offer some universally applicable suggestions in diagnosing the problem here. We’re assuming of course that your fluid levels are up to recommended specification (particularly the Polaris Demand Drive Fluid required to fuel the front hubs) and that the front drive shaft isn’t damaged/ can rotate freely.

If this checks out, and operation in real wheel drive seems okay, you’re going to want to grab an electrical multimeter, remove the front plastic and begin doing some diagnostics. Begin by testing the 4×4 actuation switch itself. A short here or even a bad connection can cause failure of the 4×4 system to engage.

Next you’ll want to head to the front of the machine and confirm that the front hub is receiving power. You will find four small wires going to the hub (2 to the right side and 2 to the left).

Confirm that there is electricity (12 volts) at these connections by placing your meter leads there with the ATV running and the AWD switch activated.

If your getting voltage here, disassemble the hub enough to expose the coil. Fire up the machine and again make sure the AWD switch is on and place the metal side of a small screwdriver near the coil. You should feel the tug of magnetism as you get close. If not, you likely have a break in one of the wires here.

Lastly check the condition of the armature plate.
