Ask The Editors: The Correct Honda for a Bigger Guy
We wouldn’t go much smaller than the 300EX.
I have seen in some posts that the 300EX is small, and as a 6’2″ guy weighing 225lb I don’t know if it would be too small, and if a 250EX/X would be larger. I won’t be racing or anything, mostly just trail riding, some field driving, and maybe mild jumping. Any thoughts? Thanks
As you say you already know how to use a manual clutch and are interested in the Honda TRX line, we’d recommend looking into the TRX400EX. All of the machines you are considering are known for their reliability and ease of use but a man of your stature will certainly find the 250EX and 300EX a bit cramped.
Even if you didn’t mind the restrictive ergonomics of these machines initially, your stats would certainly find the limitations of the small-bore engines and stock suspension fairly quickly; especially if jumping is on the menu.
While Honda no longer manufacturers the 400EX, it did enjoy a very healthy 10-year run (1999-2009), amassing a massive aftermarket catalog in the process.
With a chassis based on Honda’s own legendary 250R, the sky is pretty much the limit for what can be done with the machine. In stock trim, electric start, reverse, a manageable power spread and manual clutch made it very good trail quad. Plus it boasts Honda’s reputation for reliability and high resale value. If, as you advance with your own skills and comfort on the machine, you decide to opt for higher performance or beefier components, it has limitless potential in that regard too.
If you absolutely have to go with one of the models on your list, the 300EX offers a bit more performance and growth potential but you’d be wise to go in seeking some performance mods and beefier shock springs at the very least.
