Dear ATVC: I have a 1999 Yamaha Blaster I bought on kijiji in October and there is no key. You just kick start it. I have seen videos on YouTube and you can sometimes see people turning a key. I am wondering if one of the previous owners of my blaster took it off or if it is an aftermarket thing? ThePython1717

Your first inclination is the correct one, the 1999 Yamaha YFS 200 (Blaster) did indeed come from the factory with a keyed ignition. In fact, the part remained unchanged from model years 1998-2006.

Removing the key and bypassing that section of the ignition circuit was a fairly common modification intended to both simplify starting and a virtual must-do for those individuals who misplaced their machine’s key (even though aftermarket keyed ignitions as well as OEM replacements could be purchased for the fastidious).

Obviously, you still have that option to revert back to a key system if the lack thereof bothers you (we’ve located aftermarket universal kits for around $10); otherwise there is no harm in continuing to run your bypassed ignition.
