Ask the Editors: Checking My Piston Rings Without X-Ray Vision
Actually, yes, there are signs to watch for that can clue you in on the condition of your rings without digging into the internals and all of them involve oil.
First, keep an eye on your muffler. If you’re noticing abnormal amounts of exhaust smoke or blow-by oil splatter accumulation, that is a pretty good indicator that you may be due for a top end refresher.
Next check out the oil breather tube; moisture is normal but if the tube is dripping oil, this is also a sign that excessive ring wear is allowing oil to freely bypass the piston.
Finally, and it probably sounds obvious given the other two answers, be aware of oil consumption. Watch your sight-glass very carefully; if you discover you’re frequently having to add engine oil to maintain the normal operating range, this is a strong indicator that the top-end is worn.
We actually get this question quite commonly as it appears the increased cost of top-end service of the modern high performance 4-stroke when compared to the 2-strokes of yesteryear have a lot of riders and racers concerned.
