Ask the Editors: Which Exhaust Is Right for Me?
I have a Honda 400EX that I just ride in the dunes. Want to do a slip on exhaust and decided I want an HMF but am not sure if the Performance series or the Competition series is right one for my quad. Just want a little wake up, I don’t race or anything. Just play in the sand. Any info would be great. Thx Lisa Harriman Carter
After placing a call to HMF, it sounds like the Performance series slip on would be the better choice for your needs. Not only is it easier on the wallet, it’s designed to offer equal power distribution across the entire range of your ATV. In other words, any gains in performance will be felt evenly as you pull through each gear rather than a distinct surge down low or in the top-end for example.
The Performance Series is assembled on an durable 6063-T6 aluminum alloy shell, with magnesium and silicon as the alloying elements. A high-temp powder coat allows for a completely custom look. It also makes use of a 2 1/8″ unrestricted core with a special hole pattern that allows the exhaust system to increase power evenly throughout the RPM range.
And, like all HMF set-ups, you can expect a meaner growl- in this case described as a deep aggressive, angry tone. HMF claims that either series slip on will be good for 10-15% more horse power and torque throughout the power curve.
The Competition Series, as the name suggests, is the better choice for racing applications. It’s pricier and features a system of 3 interchangeable inserts that effect the sound and power output of the ATV differently, giving the rider complete control over the type of power and sound needed for different track conditions.
Hope this helps!
