Dear ATVC: So I have a 110cc semi-auto atv (only foot shifter). Anyway. As soon as I press the gas in, roughly 1 second later I have to upshift gears. Then about 3-5 seconds later I have to shift to third (top gear). I was wondering if by changing the sprockets I could maybe make the gears last a little bit longer. The max speed I have reached on flat ground is 36mph. It takes me about 15-20 seconds to reach that. Thank you for the help. Steven_Bills

Do keep in mind that an air-cooled 110cc will not offer much in the way of breadth between its 3 gears no matter how much you affect the final gear ratio (altering the two external sprockets).

That being said, you may be able to eek a bit more range out of them by using the following rule of thumb:

Gearing a quad up or down: Up refers to a taller gear ratio, which translates to more overall speed throughout the powerband. Gearing a machine down means a lower ratio and hence harder acceleration at the cost of top-end speed throughout each gear.

So how does one go about gearing up or down? Simply this:

Less teeth on the rear sprocket or more on the countershaft = gearing up.
More teeth on the rear sprocket or less teeth on the countershaft = gearing down.

You will want to gear your ATV up.. Purchase a sprocket with less teeth on the rear or more on the front (countershaft); or some combination of the two depending on how it feels to you in action.
