Tough to sense this sensor.

Dear ATVC: I have a 2012 Honda 420 Rancher ES. Where is the shift angle sensor? Is it part of the shift motor? Thanks. marstonk

Check out the following schematic for an idea of the location on your machine:

Contrary to how the name makes it sound, the shift angle sensor is a surprisingly simple mechanism. It consists simply of a pair of contact brushes mounted to a spring-loaded wheel that move along an electrically conductive strip that varies in resistance from one to the other.

They can often be cleaned with a steady hand assuming there hasn’t been physical damage to the assembly.

This post is very useful for tips on how to restore your current sensor.

If replacement is your only option, here is a YouTube tutorial that will walk you through the procedure.
