Ask the Editors: What is My Kodiak Gauge Measuring?
What started out in our opinion to be a simple question actually revealed some interesting facts. Not all 2001 Yamaha Kodiak 400s came equipped with gauges from the factory. Base models, in effort to keep costs down, were simply given lights to indicate problems such as low oil pressure (AKA “Idiot Lights”).
If this happens to be the case with your particular model, there is always the possibility that an aftermarket gauge cluster or hour meter has been installed at some point during the machine’s lifespan; in which case we can’t be certain what it is measuring without photos.
However, there were also models released with an OEM speedometer (shown above)with trip meter that measured in miles and could be manually reset to zero via an external knob (#7 on the schematic).
