Ask the Editors: Need a Work-Ready SxS

Dear ATVC: I’m looking for help choosing a used SxS with 4×4 grip and the torque to climb steep hills with a load of grapes and brake with all four wheels (btw, does any machine give 4 wheel parking brakes for steep hills?) Reliability is a huge concern. Speed is not. Dump bed would be nice. Large bed is important. NorCal Farmer

Yours is a tricky question for one simple reason- there are actually so many solid choices in the work-ready UTV segment that option overload can be a legitimate factor. Your post leaves out a few important points; namely budget concerns and what type of dealership and parts support are available in your area. These are two factors that should weigh heavily in your decision-making process. Additionally, of course, there is the reality that going used is almost always limited to what you’ll be able to locate in classifieds and on dealership lots.

That being said, there are a few machines that we’ve found excel in the type of laborious conditions you describe.
kubota
Kubota RTV Series: From the daily dependability of their diesel workhorse RTV900XT, to the unique transformability of the new RTV1140CPX, to the compact, efficient and technologically-advanced performance of the gas-powered RTV500, Kubota side-by-sides are durable, overbuilt and designed for work. They’re pricey, comparatively and tend to hold their value better than most UTVs in the range but we’re certain their models will fit the bill.
bob_cat
Bobcat UTVs: Bobcat utility vehicles (UTVs) are another option designed to get things done. They accelerate thanks to hydrostatic drive. Larger beds allow you to haul more in fewer trips. Maintain traction in challenging conditions. Choose from several seating configurations. Tackle any job with a full selection of models designed for performance, comfort and versatility.

We’ve also had success with models from New Holland, John Deere, the Kawasaki MULE etc. We would base a lot of the decision on dealer support in your area and the best possible condition for the more reasonable price you can locate.

You’ll find some universal tips on what to look for when going used in an article we did on the subject by clicking here.
