Ask The Editors: CDI Box Outrage

1999 Arctic Cat 400 Automatic 4x4
Parts support minimal and fading fast.

Dear ATVC: I have a 1999 Arctic Cat 400 4×4 that the CDI box has gone out on. I can only find one on eBay and it’s like $450.00. Where can I find one?

Also, has anyone used one of the Chinese wiring harnesses that has all the components?

Thank you for your help.

Indeed if you’re looking for an OEM replacement, parts support on these 1990s Arctic Cat quads ended long ago so the few that remain in the wild can pretty much ask whatever they want and expect to get it.

Sadly the aftermarket too has seemed to have completely overlooked this particular model (a shame too, because the 250 /300 got a lot of aftermarket love and to this day brand new units are available for around $30).

This doesn’t leave you a whole lot of options. About your best best is to save an alert on google in the event that a used one pops up for sale. Even new old stock OEM units appear once in a while but expect to pay somewhere in the park of $750 for one of these.

The other option that could save you a few bucks would be opting to have your OEM unit repaired. There are a couple of services that allow you to ship the unit directly to them, charge $55 up front to tear it down then provide the estimate of what it would be to repair/ rebuild. These typically top out at around the $200 mark so it should still be substantially more affordable than $450 for a used one off eBay.

Some of the places that offer this service:

Regulator/ Rectifier
Carmo (bit pricier)

We also found a compatible used OEM unit on eBay for $329/ free shipping here.
