Ask The Editors: Help Me Identify This New Trendy Part
Dear ATVC: Okay I’ve got one for you. I was at the races this past weekend and noticed something I hope you can help identify. There were colorful machined metal cylinders that looked like they were screwed into the rear brake fluid reservoir. What are these things and what do they do?
You have almost enough information in your question to answer yourself – these are rear brake reservoir extenders. Essentially they are machined barrels that screw onto the top of the rear brake master cylinder fill. What they do, as the name suggests, is increase the volume of brake fluid within the master cylinder for additional braking leverage.
A second bonus arrives thanks to those fins cut in the metal designed to channel air. By offering an additional degree of cooling for the brake fluid, brake fade during long motos on hot days is drastically reduced as well.
They can be had for around $20 and are designed to simply screw onto the master cylinders of most major brands.
