Ask The Editors: I Need To Get My ATV Fix At Home
It’s cheap but it isn’t deep.

Dear ATVC: I managed to get hurt training for the upcoming football season and decided to use the downtime to get into a good ATV/ off-road video game. I know you recommended one a while back but can’t think of the name of it. Was it ATV Renegades? If not, do you know anything about that one too?

ATV Renegades is a budget racing game available for all the current platforms ($19.99) both in physical media form as well as digital download.

While the price is certainly attractive, this is definitely one of those “you get what you pay for” experiences. The physics engine is very arcade-like, which is to say you pretty much hold the throttle wide open the whole race, look for speed boosters around the tracks and try to jam as many tricks into each jump as you can.

Don’t get us wrong, we enjoy a nice simple off-road video game race experience as much as the next couch potato, but find that after a few laps, ATV Renegades gets stale in a hurry. No need to take our word for it, though, here is some game-play footage that really captures the experience perfectly:

What we think you are thinking of was our review of Overpass.

Overpass is a much, much deeper play experience that often relies on patience and persistence to collect wins. There is very little “hold it wide open” in Overpass. The experience can be a bit frustrating at times but the reward for clearing a technical section is right up there with doing it in real life.

These days it costs about the same as Renegades so our advice is to go with the one more suited to your style of gaming. Or, since winters are long, do like us and get them both so you can alternate between carving mindless laps and mastering the off-road simulation element all without getting off the couch.
