Reader question and answer regarding ATV race settings
Even the same make and model will likely result in some fresh testing to be sure.

Dear ATVC: I race locally and am the type of rider who writes down all of his optimal settings each season. I’m planning on picking up a new machine next month but am getting the same make and model. As there are no real changes between last model year and this one, would you suspect most of my settings will transfer over?

Interesting question – and, as much as we’d like to tell you that everything should be a perfect match, the truth is most of our settings, suspension especially, don’t really work that way. Why? Because very minuscule changes internally can lead to significant performance differences.

For example things like the life of the shock oil, which thins over time, shock springs soften as they age, even things like temperature and elevation on a given day can play a part.

We’re not sure what other settings you’re keeping – some may be more applicable than others. Steering damper resistance, handlebar bend and sweep, physical preferences, these can fairly universal if you’re going to be running the same machine but as for the rest, think of them almost like tire pressure – they provide a great starting point, they’ll get you in the ballpark, but the only way to be 100% certain that you’re getting exactly what you expect from your new quad is to perform your own testing and then fine-tuning accordingly in the conditions you’ll be riding.
