Ask The Editors: Street Legal Kits for SxS
Taking it to the streets.

Dear ATVC: I was wondering about a decent street legal kit to buy for my Polaris RZR900. Something that doesn’t coast a arm and leg but something that works.

Well, we have some good news for you – while street legality isn’t a universal thing, often coming down to the ordinance and requirements of various states, counties and even townships, you will find absolutely no shortage of quality street legal kits to choose from that include all of the DOT-approved accessories required to meet these requirements.

Upper end kits like this one from Pro UTV Parts will set you back about $319 but you can easily get by with something like this universal street legality kit from Amazon for $59.

At a glance, it’s clear that most kits, regardless of price, include essentially the same bits: Turn signals, switches, lights, horn, license plate brackets etc. So what’s the difference between the two? Cosmetics, mostly. Lower end kits come with simple LED flashers and universal 12-volt wiring harnesses, upper end, vehicle specific kits often include wiring that is a designated length for the vehicle in question’s dimensions, fancy external LED displays, and, in the case of the RZR, compatibility with features like Polaris’ Ride Command to control the switches if so desired.

The bottom line is, like most UTV accessories, how much you spend has a lot to do with what you’re looking for out of the investment. Sky’s the limit when it comes to the area of customization and flashy display but you can certainly get by with a universal kit for south of $100 that will get you down the road just fine. Lastly, be aware that any kit you choose will demand a bit of familiarity with tinkering with your machine’s 12v electrical system. Fortunately most kits today operate on a semi-plug and play basis; just a matter of running wires to included harnesses and plugging them in at specified junctions.
