Dear ATVC:

I am looking for input on the Cub Cadet Volunteer 4X4 EFI. Good/ Bad? It’s on my short list.
Thanks.

With the influx of UTV popularity in recent years and the success rival John Deere enjoyed with their Gator line, it was all but inevitable that Cub Cadet would take a stab at the fray. Beginning in the 2006 model year, Cub Cadet did just that with their Volunteer series of UTVs.

We’ve had no issues of reliability in our testing and the only recall we’re aware of took place back in 2010 that affected about 200 units (the front lower ball joint could detach and cause a loss of steering control). The issue has since been remedied of course and any affected vehicles will be repaired free of charge at any Cub Cadet dealer.

With a top speed of 35mph and a penchant for ugly conditions, it’s been our experience that the Volunteer works best for individuals concerned with the “utility” aspect of the term UTV. Additionally it boasts over 40 attachments at present. In fact the machine’s primary competition comes in the form of the Kawasaki Mule, Honda Big Red, Kubota RTV500, Bobcat 4×4 UTV and the above mentioned John Deere Gator.

The 2014 Vounteer 4×4 EFI’s primary selling points are:

747cc EFI V-Twin engine
4-wheel drive with differential lock for traction
1,400-lb. towing and payload capacity
