Ask the Editors: Where Does My Oil Go?
What oil goes where?

Dear ATVC: I accidentally put oil in the side plug by the pull start of my 1986 Polaris Trail Boss 250. Is this bad? Can I drain it or should I drain? What kind of oil do I need? 143

Whether or not it is damaging and should be drained depends entirely upon where you added the oil and how much you put in.

Had you removed the bolt next to the pull starter and filled that casing (see above photo), any oil added would have gone into the recoil assembly. Generally speaking, a little lubrication here isn’t a bad thing. However, if we’re talking anything over a few ounces, you’re going to want to remove the bolts in the circular pattern around the perimeter and remove that excess oil.

As far as what you actually need- this is a 2-stroke motor coupled to a belt drive transmission; very similar to a snowmobile design. You should have a small tank in the front that serves to deliver 2-cycle oil via the internal injector.

Fill this tank with quality 2-cycle oil and the transmission’s fill will have a dipstick. This is where about 18oz of Polaris AGL transmission fluid goes. Ask the Editors: Where Does My Oil Go?
