Not as bad as you fear.

Dear ATVC: Does anyone know how to best remove the foot shifter from an 05 Yamaha Wolverine 350? I am trying to replace it with a heel/ toe shifter and it looks like the engine has to be removed. I am hoping this is not the case.

The good news is, depending on which heel/ toe shifter you bought, you shouldn’t have to remove anything but the old shifter to make the swap.

The Wolverine does make use of a particularly long shift shaft that can be a bit laborious to remove but your shifter assembly should, if it’s like the ones we’ve encountered, be designed to simply mount to the stock spline.

Getting the stock shifter off entails removal of the clip and washer from the back side of the shifter arm and tapping the shifter itself free from the shaft. Reverse the process to install the new one. It should make continued use of the stock linkage assembly, shaft etc.

Your new shifter assembly should hopefully be plug & play ready for the existing shaft spline but if it’s not – remove and reuse the stock shifter arm:
