While it’s easy to assume that the value of brake lights in the realm of ATVing was fairly obvious from the onset. After all, dim and low-light night riding is generally a staple in the off-roading arena. Not so!

Tail lights were strictly optional throughout most of the 80s and brake lights rarer still. They weren’t deemed necessary until 1998 when they became required standard equipment for all ATVs sold in the United States.

If you consider the 1970 Honda US90 three-wheeler the first official ATV, that would mean it took us 28-years to make brake lights standard equipment.
