Product Review: SilverSport Fitness Towel
Science Fiction Tech
Well now that it’s 2011, it’s only fitting that the benefits of nanotechnology (that is structures on an atomic scale) come in daily applications. Science fiction novels have been promising us nano machines for some time now and ideas like paint that could change the color of your walls with the press of a button are intriguing to say the least.
SilverSport isn’t quite there yet but make no mistake, their use of nanotech to deliver some pretty incredible sporting products would have been the realm of science fiction just a few years ago.
We recently spent a few weeks with their Silver Towel product, which refers to the nature of the particles that it consists of rather than the exterior color of the fabric. Believe it or not silver ions have been proven in studies to sterilize over 650 types of bacteria and show a toxic effect on many viruses, algae and fungi as well: Essentially silver nano particles make for a natural defense against all of the microbial critters you don’t want multiplying in your towel after you’re done drying off.
How does it Work?
Actually a lot like any other towel. Aside from the fact that you can feel good knowing the fabric is wiping out harmful bacteria, it functions just like any extra absorbent towel (3 times more absorption than cotton). It accomplishes this by integrating viscose bamboo fiber into its fabric construction. What results is a surprisingly capable towel that you can use to dry off post-ride then stuff back into your gear bag without guilt.
Intelligence in a Towel
The nanosilver particles incorporated into all SilverSport products are activated by moisture, be it sweat or just water from your shower. Once activated, the product begins releasing silver ions, which immediately start eliminating odor-causing bacteria on contact.
Options
The Silver Towel is available in two sizes: 20” x 30” for sweat management while working out and 20” x 60” for heavy duty drying and two color schemes (black and silver). We tried them both and really came to rely upon the 20” by 60” version even for household duties when we weren’t out on the trails.
Special Instructions
Contrary to common misconception, the towel can be washed and dried along with your other linens, and the Terra Silver protection will not fade over time.
Odds and Ends
Like all of the products by SilverSport, the Silver Towel is made in the USA. It’s available through sporting goods store chains such as Dicks (both online and in-store) and retails for .99
