Product Review: Speedkit DMX ATV Tool Set
Blame on the weather if you must, but at present, your author is dealing with close to seven feet of snowfall. Yes that’s no typo. If you’ve been unable to avoid the National news in any capacity, you are surely aware that Buffalo has been hit with some of the worst snowfall in not only our own storied history, but in the historical archives of the US as well.
What does all of this have to do with anything, you ask? Well simply this: The concept of cold weather riding (and worse still, the prospect of a mechanical failure in such conditions) is the perfect opportunity to review one of several products that can make all of the difference between riding one’s way out of trouble and having to call for help and hope you can be located miles from civilization.
Enter CruzTOOLS; a company who specializes in creating tool kits for powersports and guitar applications. Say what? Yes, it’s true, they balance their creative and manufacturing scales between motorcycling needs and of those for musicians. They claim to be passionate about both riding and playing instruments and it is those passions that fuel their product lines. We can’t verify the effectiveness of their musician tools but off-roading is certainly something we know a bit about.
We opted to check out their $39.99 Speedkit DMX; a portable toolkit specifically designed to target ATV and UTV use. The kit includes 10mm and 12mm combination wrenches, 5-in-1 screwdriver, 14mm x 17mm open end wrench, 8mm nut driver, four Allen wrench/ star keys, a pair of Vise-grips, 2-in-1 spark plug socket with handle, and a tire pressure gauge.
All of these items pack neatly into an included durable camo pouch that measures 7” x 2” x 2” (18 x 5 x 5cm) and weighs in at 1.75 lbs.
In action perhaps the best way to view the Speedkit DMX is to consider it a slightly higher build variation of the OEM toolkits usually found in the under-seat cavity of your ATV. There are a couple of critical pieces here that are very welcome additions over the factory stuff- namely the 5-in-1 screwdriver and a set of strong, functional locking pliers.
Of course when it comes to the idea of trying to make a tool set as portable as possible, there is a great deal of picking and choosing that has to take place in the hopes of selecting the bits that will be of the greatest use to the largest number of individuals. In that regard CruzTOOLS has done an admirable job here. Each and every tool contained within was clearly chosen for its commonality among most off-road vehicles. We believe then when they say their tools are created by individuals who actually ride.
We conclude that this set makes for a decent supplement to the OEM toolkits included with every ATV on the dealership showroom floor. The small size and reasonable MSRP make it a worthy stocking stuffer for the off-roader on your shopping list. If, per chance, you have lost the OEM tools that came with your ATV or purchased your machine used and never got em, the CruzTools Speedkit DMX becomes a must-have item.
