Red face 2007 SunL SLA-135 ATV help

My husband and I bought this used and it doesn't have an air filter on it... I order one, yeah wrong one!! Looking at this one, of course Im no mechanic - but I have common sense, the hose, coming off the ?? carburator (which is stopped up by a dirt dobber nest) must go to the other side of the air filter? Of course, I have an impatient husband that doesn't wait for the air filter to come in... and so we get it going and ride it around the yard a few time 2 and a half times to be exact, and it dies. That happened a few times, now it will try to start but just won't! We have put a new battery and a new spark plug on it and bought an air filter that is 32mm instead of 35mm lol so now we have to order another one?! If you can tell me what it can mess up with riding it like we did with no air filter, and if that hose goes to the top of the air filter so I can tell my husband how to fix his screw up. Oh and I saw a video on youtube about the governor and made him try that, and it worked for a few laps... then died. Thanks

not starting: are you defining that as won't "run"/idle? i presume so. sounds like it cranks/turns over. just not "running".
did it bog down and die or just "quit"? when cranking, is the spark plug wet with gasoline? does the spark plug have sufficient spark? true, never run a quad without an air filter. now, do you have gasoline in the float bowl? dirt and solids could've plugged up the jets while riding around unprotected. mud dobber nests? wow, dirt sucked into the carb more than likely. tear the carburetor apart, clean the jets, check the float for proper operation. don't buy parts unless you have to. tell'em be patient. post the results back with us. thanks.

Ok, I am going to take pictures while he takes this carb apart! So we (he) can be sure to get it back together. It did crank up before, but when we would get to riding it, it acted like the carb was flooded? Wouldn't crank for a while, we would wait, try it again and it would crank, we would ride it and it would die... and so now it won't crank at all, but it tries. I don't know if that makes since or not. Thanks, for the help and will let you know what happens!!!

how to clean a carb on a ATV - YouTube

hyperlink above is one of many on how to clean an atv carb. don't use a drill! pay attention to part placement and order. make sure the float is working. that delivers gas to the bowl which feeds the jets of which will have to be pulled and cleaned so you can see daylight through the orifices. have fun! don't worry, this ain't rocket science.

don't worry if your carb ain't the same as the carb in the videos. it's OK. the principle is the same. that is why i sent the video. BUT, you are indeed planning ahead by taking pics of your carb cleaning process! that'll do.

take photos. this is an easy jigsaw puzzle. not much to it really. they usually come out on the left hand side of the quad. it may be easier to take the fuel tank, seat, and air filter box off too.
