Default Buttload of mods tomorrow.

Horrible, horrible day at work today, so I'm taking tomorow off. I'm going to use the time to install 1st. my new black spring and check my belt, then give it a quick test on my lawn to see if I can finally get my front end off of the ground. Then a quick re-jet and a trip to my local trail for a speed check. Then a napa hose followed by a speedcheck, and probably another jet change, and yet more speedchecks. I'll have to do some sort of exhaust work down the road. I hope to finally see wheelies, and then a steady mph increase between changes. In any case, I'll be able to pull my "bone stock" line from my signiture. If I can get 68mph before the CDI mods come out, I'll be pretty happy. I think I'll be able to hang with my buddy's sport quads in the straight-a-ways, and with the CDI mods, maybe pass them. The sports are stock of course... but I'll just tell them mine still is. A little fib between friends never hurt anyone.

Anyone think 6mph from jetting and intake is out of the question?

If you get 6mph from intake and jetting changes, you'll be the first to do it! (Unless the jetting is currently off)

I'm actually anticipating 20-30 extra mph. Don't worry tho' I'll lie and say it was only 6 so ya'll don't feel to bad! I think I'm running fairly lean now, so I'm hoping for some decent #'s. I tried a little extra air a while back and lost about 8mph, hoping to go the other way.

At sea level, Do you think a rejet will be a must with a k&n and snorkle? Im just scared of the jet guessing game, I see alot of people that loose power when jetting. I assume they are doing it wrong, but I wouldnt be any better. And the dealers around here are worse than me. At least the ones Ive talked to so far. I have dealers tell me you cant adjust the belt tension on a prairie. If that says anything about there knowledge. Then I go straight to nyrocs site and find everything I need to know.

Rivermud: most bikes run slightly lean in factory form. Kawi. does this for reduced emisions, even tho' running slighlty rich provides better WOT performance. If you increase the airflow into the engine, you can lean the mix out further. But every bike is different, so there's no guarantees about what needs done. I believe mose people who rejet end up with a 142F, and 145R. I'm still running high altitude stock at the moment.

Ah, the best laid plans. As such I only got as far as the tranny work. NAPA had to order the hose, it's supposed to be in first thing in the morning.

My belt seemed really really loose so I went all the way and removed the 1 shim the factory installed before installing the black spring. I bypassed the nyroc tool and tried compressing with flat stock steal. This didn't compress the spring enough to really get the clip out. I ended up using a pair of sockets under the bar to compress the spring past the central shaft. Kind of clumsy, but it worked. The install was fairly straight forward and I managed to not break anything. I took pics of before and after belt tension, post later. The end result was significanlty tighter belt tension, and NO squeak at idle in gear or otherwise.

Perfomance increase was noticeable, but not amazing. No huge wheelies... but I did manage to get the front off of the ground in low on pavement. At least I'm assuming the wheels came off the ground based on the high speed out of control swerve I took at my neighbors house. It was accelerating like a **** on pavement, but no real wheelies. I'm not sure if I was getting enough traction.

Anyway, the new snorkle will go in tomorrow, and hopefully jets. For those that have snorkled, what plasic needs removed, and what's the basic procedure for the swap? I still haven't looked to close in that area, so it's pretty gray at the moment.

AJ,

Replace the snorkle while you have the filter case off doing the jetting. Just remove the clamp holding the snorkle onto the front of the breather case and reinstall your new one. Make sure when you slide the snorkle and case back into place that the rubber flap around the steering stem doesn't cover the opening to the snorkle. Maybe pop off the small plastic cover in front of the steering stem before pulling out the airbox and you'll see the stock snorkle on the right side when viewed from the front. If it looks the same when your done you should be good to go.

Ok as I'm sure you're all losing sleep over this...

First the snorkle. I'm sorry guys, but I just don't see it. The inlet into the air box is roughly the same diameter as the rest of the snorkle, excluding the bottleneck at the tip. Even going to a huge snorkle, the air box inlet is going to be the same size. As such I decided against the snorkle, even the napa version. I took a jig saw to the factory snorkle, and now it is the same basic diameter all the way to the airbox. I have a way to enlarge it even more if I want to, but I have other plans.

Second, the jets. I pulled my jets and found I was set at 130/132, instead of the 132/138 I was expecting. Checking the charts I'm jetted for like 10k for some reason. No wonder the bike felt lean. I had planned on jetting to 135/140 on Wolley's recomendation. But for some reason my 140 jet did not make the order, and I had not ordered a 135. So I had a 130/132/138/140 to play with. I went local and bought a 135 for $7.50. That sucked as I can order them for $3. I didn't see I was missing my 140 until after I got back, and I didn't feel like spending another $7.50 anyway. So I ended up installing 135/138. Idle mix was at 1 turn out, I bumped it to 1 1/2.

So anyway, I've got stock exhaust, stock air filter, new jets and modded snorkle. Off to the park for testing.

I did a run down a local trail to warm the bike up, and things felt wrong. It was kind of gutless and didn't quite sound right. But I haven't been on the bike in a while and wanted to let it warm up so I kept going. Got back to the main road where I generally do my speed runs and opened it up. About 1/2 through the run I shut it down. The bike was fighting to top 50 and felt surgey. Drove back to the truck and pulled the trim in front of the snorkle to make sure the airway was clear, which it was. The bike wasn't backfiring through the pipe or the carb, and the natrual assumption was running rich. So I pulled the airbox lid and replaced the top plastic.

Bam, whole new bike. Still no wheelies, but I can't get any traction on the dirt anyway. I ended up with repeated 63mph runs, up from a high of 62mph. I tried a couple different plastic combos, even did a no lid, no plastic no filter run. In the end I found that just removing the airbox lid gives the same top speed as any other combo, and keeps the bike quiet enough to sit on. The no filter run dropped me back to 62mph, but looking down the carbs during the run (kinda cool, pick a straight stretch) shows a lot of turbulence to the airflow. I think if I had replaced the top plastic to make it smoother, I might have picked up another mph. No plug reads, just seat of the pants.

Top end isn't near what I'd like, but the off-idle to midrange improvement is incredible. The bike fishtails at high speed and is actually a bit of a handfull. Even the trails I've run tons of times got pretty interesting. So I decided to keep this jetting for now. I'm ordering a new air filter and I have plans to mod the airbox with a couple old motorcycle tricks to increase airflow. Until then I'm running without the lid. I need to work on the muffler to keep the engine breathing well, and of course the mod boxes to give the top end I want. But I think I've taken the right steps to this point. I have ambitions of out-running my buddies stock DS and still be able to haul an elk out of the woods. But baby steps, baby steps.

Also did a 4wd speed run. Also 63mph, with a much better initial launch. This was all done at 8000 feet, so anywhere lower should be even more impressive.

If ya want more speed you should get a racing type ATV. (Raptor, Kaws new one, etc.) Gimme slow and lots of power. Although my P650 with the old tires and rims hit 68 on pavement, bone stock. Speed won't get ya throught the technical off road stuff that the P650 was intended for though. I just put the black spring in with a new belt. Spins em good on the pavement. In high and low I have no doubt it will lift em high. I was able to do wheelies with old spring and I got 589's in high. As soon as I get to some hardpack or grass I will really know if the black spring werks better.
