KVF650 - as a FUV (Farm Utility Vehicle)
#1
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I'm new to this forum .... so please bear with me ....
I have a '02 Kaw Prairie 650 that I use as a Farm Utility Vehicle and was wondering what mods that you think that I can/should put on my 650. We don't race, hunt with it on occasion, mostly used on our small farm. Couldn't afford a tractor so I got the best of both worlds.
Over the last month and a half it is getting harder to start and runs rough, keeps cutting out, Backfires . . . no power! What's up??? I have read here about Red/black springs, Jetting, snorkels, etc …. We do a lot of stop n’ starts, short hauling, fence line checking and rebuilding, manure moving, plowing …… farm stuff. What do I really need at this point.
Any help you can send my way would be appreciated!!!

Sounds like your choke may be sticking... Mine was doing this and found that the chokes were stuck about half way... As far as rough starting a jet kit and K&N and shes starts and idles much better..

I would recomend the Black spring for sure. Sounds like you need more in the way of dependability than speed, therefore I would keep it mostly stock. Alot of mods require other mods to get the benifet from them. If pulling power is what you need you could get the holeshot module, this will improve your low and mid range power and does'nt seem to require any additional mods. Tires will help alot with the chores as well, the stock tires are no good. So for a reliable powerhouse with traction this couldnt hurt, If you want to get deeper in mods Im sure the guys on this forum will be a big help.

DBCooper,
If it doesn't already have it done get the choke spring upgrade. As fishhead stated earlier this was a problem on '02 models. Check your airscrews and adjust to about 2.5-3 turns out from closed. I'd go with the twinair filter in your case, it filters fine particles better than the K&N and I would think you'd get a fair amount of dust. Black secondary spring is a must for your start and stop riding and keep the deflection to the low end of the 22-27mm spectrum to get the best belt life. I wouldn't bother with a primary spring. Replace the stock tires with something in the stock sizes and in a tread pattern that will suit the conditions around your farm. Since I don't think you should go with any exhaust or intake modifications then the stock jetting should suit you fine. Also, the holeshot module will probably be too abrupt for constant start and stop use. The progressive spring upgrade is probably well suited for your conditions as the stiffer suspension could be an asset around the farm. Hope this has been some help.
