How not to get Screwed?
#3
Few sensible sellers would chance Federal mail fraud/wire fraud charges by stiffing you; further, if you pay by postal money order, you may get the Postal Inspectors on your side.
C.O.D., as suggested, is a good idea; but some sellers might not want to fool with a process that seems unfamiliar and a hassle (whether that's the actual case or not).
Some trust and risk appears essential for long-range transactions. Now, don't ask how to insure you get a GOOD engine!

I'm not sure of the website, but there is an electronic escrow service on the web. You place the money in the escrow account and the seller ships the goods. Once you are satisfied, the seller's money is released. This is good because it is a neutral party handling the money exchange.
