big tires on bayou 4x4
#1
I just bought a 93 Bayou 4x4 with what was called a bigfoot package(26"tires). When I got it home I noticed the front tires/wheels had significant play(did not notice this before) The tie rods appear solid, the play seems to be on the hub only. Question, after I get the front end fixed up should I get rid of the big tires? This is my first ATV so any advice would be appreciated.

I'm not sure what you mean by, "play."
The size of the tires shouldn't affect play in the steering, and the hubs fasten pretty solid to the axle with cotter-pinned 25mm (I think) nuts. Any "play" seems likely someplace else in the steering gear.
I've ridden with Bayou 300's and 400's with oversize tires; both Mudrunners and Trailbreakers, in both the mire of Cochranton and the mountains of Quads, On-the-Rocks!; all machines performed successfully.
My observation: Bayous can handle oversize tires. And, this past weekend, I rode the swamps and marshes and ditches of the Tidewater with a rider whose '89 Bayou must have its original factory (worn) tires; every one of the 13 riders (including a newly-Vamped Honda 4X4) got stuck, except the guy on the old Bayou, who spent lots of time with his tow strap, pulling the rest of us out!
I think Bayous are relatively indifferent to their tires; your steering problem may be somewhere else.

First, my apologies for my lack of knowledge and not furnishing adequate detail first time around. It is a 300 Bayou 4x4. The play I am describing is actual movement of the front wheel relative to the axle. There is no movement in any of the steering components when I wiggle the tire. I am pretty sure it is a bad bearing. Am going to tear into it after I pick up some more metric tools. The castle nut is tight as far as I can tell. Will update when I have it broke down.
