Default Cutting Out??? What The ?!#$

My 04 Sportsman 500 has 6 hrs on her now but I notice that if I am sometimes in an awkward postion with it, it sometimes wants to cut out and not run almost likes it loaded up. This weekend it dis this in reverse but as soon as I put in forward it was fine. Back in reverse and same same. Forward fine.

What gives???

THanks

Are you using the yellow reverse override button when backing up? If not, that will cause it, it is a safety feature that is easily overlooked for new owner's of Polaris's.

when you back up and don't push the button it sounds like it is running horrible, but it is just a safety feature to keep the power down in reverse, just like the others said. Also you don't have 4x4 in reverse unless you push the button. Try it and look at the dash, it gives you a couple of slow messages also.

Thanks Guys but tell me why does it back up just fine in my driveway? While in reverse does it sense loose terrain and then start running "safely" (crappy) so to speak?

That is a good question, but the higher rpm's you go, that is when the safety steps in and you have to use the override button. It engages at a certain rpm, I would say around 2500 rpm or less that the limiter kicks in and you have to use the button. There are ways to bypass the button, but you are doing away with a safety feature and it is at your own discretion.

This is for sure not the safety kicking in then. RPMs didnt get over 1500. As soon as I touched the throttle it cut out. I think its getting too much fuel. I took it to the shop today. We will see....

Thanks

I would say then that the throttle is out of adjustment, which is another safety feature. You gotta love all that safety stuff huh?? LOL

it takes very little power to reverse on flat pavement, but if your in a bind & trying to back up without pushing the reverse override button, then its going to cut out. if your in the mud, sand or trying to back up a hill, you must press the overide button! go out & try it, then let us know if it works. the only time my sportsman sputters is when i ride long wheelie's!
