clutches in front diff. and adding additive??

Anyone know of any notices that Honda has made regarding the clutches in the front end of the 4x4's namely the 300 back in '96 due to some "popping" noises? I called the local Honda shop with my problem (popping when turning the steering wheel either stopped or moving) and they advise that Honda recommends adding a "friction modifier" that can be purchased at a local parts store?? This should calm the "popping" that I hear. DO WHAT???? Can anyone out there help or clear this up? Thanks.

I needed some "additive" a while back for curing a "popping" noise in a bad front universal joint . . .
Unfortunately, no better living through chemistry. Instead, two new universal joints, bearings and seals on both transmission and differential sides. The factroy-trained service technicians wanted to replace the driveshaft, too ("bad splines"), but when I asked for the old parts, they revised their estimate, found they could salvage the old shaft after all ($ 80 savings). Helped a little, considering the operation cost several hundred dollars at that.
I hope your cure for the "popping sound" comes in a bottle.

The friction plates in the front end have a tendancy to stick making a clicking noise while turning. Before blaming cv joints try draining the front differential oil, put in an ounce of limited slip additive then fill up the rest with regular gear oil. This should let clutches slip easier and steering will also be improved.

TxDoc2 is right on the money. I use a little GM limited slip differential additive in my 1997 300 4x4 and my 2000 Foreman ES. I bought the 300 used and heard the noise and thought the CV's were worn out. I bought the Foreman new last Oct and it made the exact same noise when it was brand new. I added the additive and haven't heard it since in either ATV.
