400 scrambler/400 sport/the same???

Pretty much. The new Trailblazer 400 is also. There were some improvments from year to year, someone more knowledgable than I will come along to enlighten us. The biggest difference to me is that the sport has a sporty looking headlight and the Scrambler has the really, really ugly (but probably much more useful if you actually ride at night) twin lights.

Prior to Model Year 2000 (1999 and back) you had Scramblers (4x4) and Sports (4x2).
In 2000 Model everything went to be called a Scrambler (4x4 and 4x2)
The 400 2x4 model in 2000 had the single hood mounted headlight while the others 400 4x4 and 500 4x2 and 4x4 all got the handle bar mounted lights.
In 2001 they droped the 400 4x4. All scamblers in 2001 includeing the 400 4x2 had the handle bar mounted lights. (There were some limited edition 400 4x4 Scrambler X along with a 500 X available as 2002 models.)
As for mechanical changes::::
In 2000 the GEN III machines recieved a different swing arm and a longer travel rear FOX shock, all with remote Reservoir, (The Sports did not have the Reservoir, Scramblers did.) Also in 2000 models recived the new heim style tie rod ends.
In 2001 the Gen III models recieved a brake update, Slotted rottors, all steel braded brake lines, and a better master cylinder w/ reservoir.
In 2002 the Gen III models recieved a steering update, A thicker steering post and a sealed bearing in the lower post support.
In 2003 the Gen III models and all Polaris ATVs recieved the spliceless belt and more sealed joints so there would be less grease zerks.
