I have a 99 Sportsman and a 98 Grizzly and ride in Colorado. I generally ride the Grizzly and my wife takes the Sportsman but the SP 500 takes more steering effort that my wife would like.
I take both when I go elk hunting and found that while it is great to have a Polaris Sportsman to get through the occasional muddy bog and while the Sportsman is great for those long all day rides, I find myself on quite a few rough steep off camber trails and I get a bit concerned........I will likely trade one or the other in ....I would likely get a Kodiak 450....sacrifice some comfort and mud ability but gain a better machine for tight, twisty off camber trails.
BTW....concerning the 98 Grizz and the 99 Sportsman......The Sportsman is the clear winner here.........both in mtce costs and overall comfort....Grizz is better in the off camber twisties and a bit easier to steer but has cost a bunch in repairs and not a great performer in the mud..........in the group I ride with.....it's the Sportsman that gets through the mud or over the snow bank and then pulls the Honda Foreman, Kawasaki Bayou and the Grizz through....
Gonna have a Kawasaki 650 in camp this year.......we'll see how it does. I drove it once already and it's "too exciting" for an old guy like me. I'd just get myself in trouble with it.
If I had to chose one machine for Colorado......Kodiak 450, but that's only because of the tight trails I go on. If you don't do much of that, I'd go for the comfort of a bigger machine......Sportsman....Grizz....something like that.
