Default Steering stem

I'm a bit pissed off. I wrecked my quad, just after getting it dialed in pretty good. I seriously tweeked the a-arms and steering stem. Those are the major things. Oh yea I wrecked myself to, I'm a little loopy because my head is killing me.

Anyways, I want to know if anybody has constructed a steering stem themself. I definitely want a +2 inch and lightweight. What type of metal stock should I use and wall thickness.

And can somebody please tell me why it costs almost a grand for aftermarket a-arms.

Default Steering stem

TBR makes them. It will not be any lighter but stronger. On the A-arms small sales item in number sold and hand made.

well not many people buy a arms for the ds so demand keeps the price high. as for the stem. Take some measurement and add one inch so you can run aftermarket handlebars with no problems and take it to a machine shop. I built my buddies for around 40 dollars. Take the time and cut both ends off the old shaft and get some light weight chrome moly tubing and weld everything up. save a ton of loot. god luck and Ihope you get better

Default Steering stem

chromoly is a type of steel right? I was looking in mcmaster-carr for some materials and they don't list any metal called chromoly apparently they have a different name for it. Do anyone know what the stock steering stem is made of. And thanks for the concern man. My head is starting to feel better but my tailbone and hip is still really hurting. I fell pretty hard and took a roll with the ds because I didn't bail. But hey, if I could I would do differently, probably less beer involved.

Default Steering stem

Not sure exactly how heavy a steering stem has to be but I would measure the wall thickness of the factory piece and go from there. Most any stainless tubing with the same wall thickness will be at least as tough as the factory piece.

Default Steering stem

chrome moly is a metal tubing that is used to build rollcages and race car chassis. I suggest a .120 wall piece of tubing. You can find it at any speed shop or metal fabricator. I usually order mine tubing from Barrnett Performance. Next time bail and keep insurance on it.
