Default Putting on new rear sprocket and chain

Is there a rule of thumb when reducing the sprocket size to he amount of links you should reduce? The stock size i was told was 84 and the stock sprocket size is 44T. I want to put on a 40T. How many links would I probobaly remove if any?

TIA

After talking to local dealer, I went with a 42T. They had all them in stock, but after telling them how and where we ride it, the 42T sounded better. What is the norm when you reduce the tooth count?
