Default desert oasis at st. anthony?

Has anyone dry camped at desert oasis at st. anthony? I have never been to this campground and dont know how it is, I am trying to make arrangements to go up there, but would like to have some idea what I am in for.

Also, where is it located, I have only been to st. anthony once and we camped at the resort.

Any info on this area would be great, I am debating going there or little sahara and I dont really want to camp in a big dirt lot with the new baby and all. there are no pictures on their website so I dont know what it is like.

well, thanks

Bat

I stayed at Desert Oasis last week, its located halfway between Sand Hills resort and Egin Lakes access. No camping at Egin Lakes right now, under new construction with new bathrooms and loading ramps being installed.
Desert Oasis is far from an oasis - you're camping right on sand with absolutely no trees anywhere. If punkasses can't keep off the gas in the grounds then your in a dust cloud. The RV sites were'nt too bad, with hookups and all, but still barren ground, and the tent site area is just open flat sand along the side of a wheat field. The irrigator comes around once every two days to offer a cool refreshing mist if you're close enough!

best part is its 2 miles from Thunder Mt., which is in sight. Just camp downwind from everybody and bring your own shade. the old guy that runs it doesn't put up with commotion at night, so if anybody bothers you he'll kick them out. I got some video footage of a K-9 unit and 2 cops kicking some people out, it was fun.

Thanks for the info, I have an rv, but they dont have any full hookup sites available. In the dunes forum, they say the blm camping area should be open July 1, but I have no idea if it is rv accessible or what the sites are like.

Thanks again, I am still undecided.

wow, that's week, I saw the rows of RV's there when I tent camped, and assumed they had hook-ups. Wonder how in the world they came up with the name oasis?? They do have some garden hose spickets up by the office that we filled jugs from....

Bat,
Someone from the ASA forums went and described his time at Oasis:

We stayed at Sand Hills. It's pretty nice but a good distance from the big dunes. We ended up parking a truck at Egin lakes area with gas cans for the long rides.

Have fun!

Hightower, he meant that they didn't have any more available hook ups. The Oasis does have hook ups, they were just full already. This place has only been available for a few years or so. As money comes available I'm sure they'll pretty it up some. I personaly don't have any problem camping on dirt and useing my own shade. I've only used hook ups one time and that was at a local park. The way I see it, this guy opened up his property to make more camping available at ST Anthonys which camping is scarce. He's making money also but to live in country like that you gotta have an edge. Wish it were my land.

Redskin is correct, I did not mean that they had no hookups. I dont mind camping on dirt either, however I have a new baby and my wife is going to be stuck close to the camper most of the time because of the baby. I dont want them stuck in some big dirt storm all weekend. I want them to have fun also.

I have never been there, I have my own shade, an outdoor carpet thing, and chairs and rv and everything I need to camp where there is nothing. I am more worried about the dust and dirt then anything.

I wish you could reserve spots at the blm area. I also wish that land was mine. Anyhow, I am going to be calling both camping areas up there and then we will decide. Might just do little sahara if all else fails, and only because I know I can camp there and have a fun time.

thanks for the link Mike, that is pretty much the story I have heard from everyone. Still undecided, I guess we could head that way and if we get there and dont like it we can head to little sahara. that would suck though.

thanks guys for the info

The only grassy area is at the resort. It would suck if the wind kicked up and started blowing dirt and sand around. The BLM camping area was very soft sand when we tried to go there once. I got stuck, luckly my brother had 4 wheel drive and got us out. There were some trees but the place was packed and there was no room for us. If the wind picked up you'd have the same problem there as at the Oasis. Now they've remodled the BLM but I don't know if they hard packed the ground or not. Good luck.

Hey Jeffroe are you coming out? That would be great! I wasn't going to bring my trailer but I may now though. You could stay with me if you like I would have room but I would need to know by tommorow night. Let me now.
