Funny sound after putting in the piston and cams?
#1
I spent all day puting it back to gether..
It started right up ( thats a good thing) but i has like a pinging sound to the motor??
It reves nice, I rode it and it had GOBS of power now but that sound is kinda wirerd?
I checked my valves before I started it they were at .017. Prett high but I will check them to day. I was told they would relace and close the gap.
I know the piston went in correctly our it would be REALLY loud right?
Cams were dead on with the - and I put in the new cam tensioner and oiled the heck out of the top....

11.5:1, you want high octane - 93/94 is just fine, no need for race gas. With 89 you'll get pre-ignition, and that's hell on a motor.
valve gap otta be .007-.009 - .017 too much, not getting full advantage of valve lift, maybe getting some tap sound too, and increased chance of shim loss at valve float if over-reved (unless running shim under bucket). Gap does close over time, as things wear, but it takes quite a while. 50 hours run time since my rebuild, still no need for adjustment yet...

I did not figure my valves woudl move so much with new cams!!!!
I will borrow some race gas, 110 from my friend. If that stops the ping then I know what it was..
I am upset if thats the case. I asked RW and they siad it was FINE with pump only gas... I even asked the dealer I bought it from....
On A lighter note that lectron 46 carb is sweet!!!!! ZERO and I mean ZERO bog and it dang near responds before you hit the throttle!!!! GOD, I cant wait to get it running perfect then go and to a ride review..
As far as I know I am one of only 2 that run the 46mm carb...

You did a good job of bringing us through all the highs and all the lows of this rebuild so Im sure I speak for others on this forum when I say a harty CONGRATS!!!!...Good to hear you finally got her going mudstud and definately a review is in order.
On the gas thing, when they say " pump gas" that usually means the highest octane you can find at a gas station. Also, if you go to the thrifty gas station on the corner, their 91 octane will not be as good as the 91 octane at a high quality station like Chevron or Shell. If you try one then try the other you will see what Im talking about.

JSsDS is correct. Not all gas is the same!!! And, gas will loose its "good stuff" if it sits around. It is like it goes flat...
Also, get the highest octane level you can at the pump.
Also, get those shim/cam clearance within spec. Those will TAP and act like a hammer hitting the shims. After some time, the shim will give out and shatter.

Youre definately beating your shims up and slamming your valves shut with all that excess clearance. And like Hightower said youre losing a little bit of lift and a lot of duration.

I run A1/A2 cams - .009 on all four is my clearance, I mentioned .007-.009 earlier because I thought that's what RW said, but now that you mention .008-.010 seems like that's correct, which is why I shot for right in the middle with .009. Anyway, .007-.010 is just fine, anywhere in there.
And different places have different gas I guess, around here 93 and 94 octane is readily available at pumps, I use 93 with the same setup you have, same piston.
