Go up 1 tooth in the front. That's what I did and I'm very happy. 85MPH with ease...... With a pipe and jet kit, just look at my sig.

 

Do not go taller in gearing if your running taller tires than 20".

You will downright suffer on the bottom.

I have the stock gearing and 22" tires, and I have loads of top end, but the low end is kinda soggy. Wheelies are impossible in third no matter how hard you try, and 2nd gear is a hard labor to get up.

Front sprocket/Rear/Rear Tire Height ...


16/40/22 - 87+ mph top speed, but soggy low-end. Longer gears.
15/40/22 - 79-80 mph top speed, better low-end, but still taller than stock gearing with 20 inch tires
14/40/22 - 74-75 mph top, KILLER low-end, shorter than stock gearing, gears get short and traction can become an issue if you have bad rubber.

15/42 is a tad taller than 14/40, but still a tad shorter than stock. Note : these are all comparisons with same tire sizes.

17/40//20 would be good if you feel you lack on the top, but you will loose some grunt on the bottom (Not a whole lot, but noticeable, wheelies will be harder, etc.).

I'm going to get my 15tooth front sprocket tomorrow, and I'll see what a difference it makes against my current 16/40/22 combo.

So, to sum it all up, if you want considerably more top speed, go up to 17 on the front, if you don't want as drastic, you can get a 42 rear (hard to find in steel) but I think you will need a longer chain for that.

So if your running 20 inch tires, try a 17 tooth front. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif[/img]

15-42 is my favorite, but 14-40 works good.

 

One gear? Sounds like you need a polaris automatic! LOL

Have you been clocked at 85 mph, or are you guessing?

 

here's what I run:

17/40 for wide open w/ 20" tires
16/40 for wide open w/ 22"tires

15/40 for woods trails, 20" tires - 5th gear is useless in woods anyway, and the closer spacing of gears with the 15T leaves me in third more with less shifting required, and 1st is lower for easier rock crawling with less clutchwork, and 2nd is perfect for super steep hillclimbs

14/40 w/ 22" sand tires for dunes

Oh, DC - I've broken 85 with 15/40 20" tires winding out 9200 rpm in fifth according to gps

 

DCryder, I'm just guessing but I passed a buddies truck and he said he was doing 90MPH but I think it's closer to 85MPH....... Not sure that I believe that I was doing 90 unless I was radared. I must say though at that speed you BETTER be paying attention because of the twitchyness.... The thing I about it most is I can get to top speed quick!..... Whether people believe me or not I can holeshot DS's with stock gearing because I have a little less tire spin and get more to the ground.. and still do 85MPH no prob! tyre, i have 22" and stock gearin right now, i can pull it up in second no prob, just crack on it n pull, she comes right up, now third is possible but it takes some more body language

 

Yea but see, you got the stock carb, I got the 45 without the acc. pump. So when I all-out stab it, I get that hesitation/bog garbage. So I have to give it a lot of gas, but a little slower for it to not hesitate.

Going to cure this by getting the pump ASAP.

With the pump, twist and 15/40/22, I should easily be able to wheelie from 1-3 no prob.
