well, i finally installed the clutch kit from high lifter in my grizzly this morning. first of all, it was a little more difficult than i read in previous forums, and the instructions could have been a written a little better. one thing that i had a problem with was that before getting started i didn't read the entire set of instructions, but more or less skimmed them and payed special attention to the tools needed. well, i started the job with all the required tools (from the beginning of the instructions) and got to the point where you need to loosen the primary sheave nut only to find in parenthesis that an air wrench would be good here. wow, if i had known that i would have made sure to borrow one before starting (should have COMPLETELY read all instructions first i guess). i did find a handy way to remove this nut after calling highlifter, then hank (maker of the clutch kit) who told me to just use my socket set and take a hammer and beat on the extension, while trying to hold the primary sheave still. i guess you can see the difficulty in this. well, here's what i came up with. if you have one, the closed end wrenches that have a bend in them to better access recessed nuts or bolts is great. to loosen the sheave nut, position the wrench against the front arm of the frame (that your floor board bolts to) to hold it in place, and take your hands and turn the sheave to lossen the nut. this can also be used to tighten the nut, using the rear arm this time. i would suggest using a torque wrench to make sure that you get the nut back on tight enough, but use the same technique (turning the sheave with your hands) as it is soooo much easier than trying to tighten the nut with the wrench while holding the sheave still. hope this helps any prospective clutch kit installers out there.

immediately upon reassembly i had to take the bike for a test run and this is what i found. there is a definite noticeable difference with the clutch kit, as this is the only performance mod that i have. it does just what it claims, engages at lower rpms. if you punch it from a stop, it accellerates considerably smoother to about fifty. bottom end power in high seems to have decreased, while bottom end power in low seems to have increased if this makes any sense. at fifty it starts to rev a little high up to sixty. overall, accelleration up to fifty is slightly quicker than before the kit was installed. because the clutch engages at lower rpm's though, if you punch it from about 15 or 20 miles per hour, it doesn't feel as crisp as it used to although its faster overall. next stop, high lifters high performance kit. this should put all the bottom end performance back in and then some. it will probably be a couple of months before its purchased and installed, but i will post again then and let everyone know how it goes. later,
