Default 1987 trail boss questions......

my friend has a 1987 trail boss that he's going to sell to me for $1000. The only problem with it is when you use the pull start it takes forever to start other that that its in pritty good condition. Is there any thing that i should look at or for before i buy it. Thank you.

Using the pull start should only take 1-2 pulls. If it dont start after that then most likely with how old it is, the compression is low. It is a cheap rebuild but 1000 seems a little steep unless it is in good condition. The older 250's were alot quicker than the newer ones. A rebuild would cost less than $200. I can almost bet that the compression is low. Anything below 110 would be hard to start with pull start and below 90 is almost impossable because you cant pull it quick enough to build compression fast enough.

There are lots of places in AZ to get them rebuilt. What part of az ? I know a great guy in Cave Creek. It is easy to do it yourself too.

I live in north Phoenix as well and there are many shops around. For a top end rebuild you need cylinder bored ,piston ,rings, gaskets. Can do it yourself for around 200.00. Screwie Lewie's says around 400 for a top end job. I would recommend an aftermarket piston.

Compression on the 250 is 130-135 on fresh motor. A rebuild is very easy if you are mechanically inclined. There is not much to a 2 stroke. If you do rebuild I would reccomend a wiseco piston, bored.20 over stock with new base and head gasket, new plug, fresh fuel and oil. Thats about it. A piston is around $90,gaskets $25, bore job around $75-100, new plug $5.99. I would say $800-900 would be good for the trailboss on fair condition. Plus about $200-400 on rebuild depending on who does it. Who knows you might not even need to rebuild it yet. First thing is to check the compression and go from there.
