Smoking 2002 Honda Rancher 4x4

Has anyone had a problem or know anyone who has had problems with this bike? I have already rerung it and it rode fine for a while but then started smoking like a freight train! very frustrated....anyone else?

If the rings partially stopped the smoking, and then the smoking returned, the new rings didn't get broken in propertly.
Did you check for grooves in the cylinder?
Did you hone the cylinder before ringing the piston?
Did you stagger the gaps on the piston rings?
Before installation of the rings, did you put the rings in the cylinder without the piston and check the gap?
etc etc etc.
Next would be to look at the valves and valve guides.
A 2002 is too new to be worn out. ....unless it has been over-reved a lot. Honda ATV engines are designed for low end torque and are not happy with high rpms.

Checked all that stuff and everything looked good before and when it went back together. Although when I initially tore it down, the piston skirts were broken off. Could if possibly be an egg shaped cylinder or something. Probably going to have it bored, new piston, etc. Hope that fixes the problem.

Im currently in the same situation in my 2000 rancher Except i got it to stop smoking and now it knocking like a SOB i think the bearings went out also I Just got a Crank assy and bearings for 50 Dollars WOW WHAT A DEAL Check it out

I just hope this solves my problems.. Even after i get my parts i think ill still have the problem of putting the thing in and getting it going again. I did the rings that Was SIMPLE but i think i got a journey in front of me with the crank
