Howdy y'all! I just got my 2000 400EX back from the dealer this weekend. It was missing and would not run sometimes. I had checked for spark, sometimes it was there and sometimes not. Since the quad was only a month old I took it back in. They claimed (And it seems fine now) that the problem was a dirty coil. They also said the location, up under the gas tank on the left side, is a poor location for this unit that is sensitive to dirt. I'm trying to come up with something to cover it to prevent reoccurrence. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Buckeye;

Don't have an answer for you, but thanks for the info. I will take a look at mine tomorrow.

i have a '99, have over 100 hours on it, mud, dust, sand. no problems yet. id say it is in a pretty safe location at this point in time.

Are the 99's up underneath the gas tank on the left side as you sit on it? In front of the choke lever? I agree their answer, that the location of the coil is the problem, is pretty shaky, but that definitely fixed my quad. Runs good now. I think I'll still put a water bottle cover, that mountain bikers use to cover the top of their water bottles, over the coil. I'll "road/mud/water/dust" test it this week.
